Now let's talk about a few of my favourite zines lately.

HATE FUCK

Hate Fuck is probably my favourite zine, consistently ruling with amazing artwork, graphic design and photography by Give Up. I also have his book of the first 7 issues. Definitely worth every penny. The quality of the prints, paper, and overall design of his zines is the best I've seen. He often screen prints his covers, prints on vellum and transparency sheets, has fold-out pages, and he always throws in a bunch of posters, prints, stickers and other goodies.

NATIONAL HANDBAG

National Handbag is a hardcore punk and anti fast-fashion zine, I loved every second of reading it, laughed a bunch, even said "Hell yeah" out loud a few times. Interviews with inspiring women in different "industries". Clever and interesting content, good lay-out. If you're into: not having a "real job", bitching about mass-manufactured clothing, shoplifting, brewing your own bath-tub gin, doing acid, listening to hardcore, wearing weird stuff, then you'll seriously dig this. I know I do.

BLACK METAL STAIN! / BLACK METAL RITUALS

You guys all know how I love my black metal and these illustration zines by Xenoc Blood poke fun of it in the best possible way. I want to pull them apart and put them all over the walls of my studio. As much as I dig Satan and love the evil stuff, these zines make me smile, and I guess smiling is pretty much the opposite of kvlt.

Awesome UFO zine, great design and lay-out, on newsprint. Interview with an abductee, lots of charts and statistics, shit gets real with this one.

CRAMHOLE and MONGREL ZINE

Lumped these two together for some stupid reason, maybe cause these aren't really 'new' and I've talked about them before. Cramhole is a super hilarious comic zine. Mongrel Zine is an awesome Canadian punk zine with great interviews, reviews, and always comes with a wicked compilation CD-R.

Tarantula Sisters Zine Issue 2 - Preview!

So I've been busy working on the 2nd issue of the TS Zine! It's gonna be a good one! Here's a little preview of a shoot I did with the ever amazing Yuli Sato, wearing knits by Goodnight,Day. Pick up the zine in a few weeks to see the whole editorial and interview with Tara-Lynn!
Also in issue 2: an interview and photos with Dan Druff of Ottawa psych punks Holy Cobras, illustrations by Jason Lee, Olivia Mew, Raymond Biesinger, a comic by Walter Scott, a fashion editorial by April Lea, a peek at my new accessories collection by Ovate, an epic short story by Taylor Hoodlum Stevenson, poetry by Andy Cross, and a few other little surprises.

Really, it's gonna be a fucking good one.
Launch date is the 18th of this month! Details to follow for the craziest party with awesome bands, if you are in Montreal you need to be there.

The Pink Noise x Tarantula Sisters

Did an interview with my good friend Mark Sauner of The Pink Noise for my zine back in August. One night after a jam, we got drunk and he let me dress him up, throw glitter on his face, and April Lea took photos of it all.

Describe The Pink Noise.
Opposing forces creating an energy somewhere in-between.
What do you think about when you write songs?
Adoring beautiful things. Capturing something that has in itself,
caught my ear, eyes, or heart.
How has living in Saint-Henri influenced you and your music?
Saint Henry has only influenced my music as far as meeting people
in the neighborhood who could play in the band, and having a cheap
place to live or practice. Toronto was more of an inspiration in a way,
because I recorded all the records when I lived there. People on the
internet were already calling me French Canadian, even though I’m
not, and even before I moved to Montreal for some reason. They were
even spelling my name as Marc..
What local bands are good right now?
Bands that I have always liked have been Tonstartssbandht, Ultrathin,
Grand Trine…
If you had a radio show, what would you play?
If I had a radio show I would play a wide range of stuff that only I
would be totally into, that would make most people change the station.
The moment when things got too tacky for the snobs, or too weird for
the boring people.
What are the last 3 albums you've listened to?
I haven’t been listening to a lot of albums lately, because the pieces of
my sound system are in disparate places right now, so
I’m listening to single songs on youtube like everyone else. I like Love
Pains by Liza Minnelli, and Gonna Have a Funky
Good Time by James Brown.
Is being underrated overrated these days?
No. I think the amount of sarcasm and cynicism has kind of
skyrocketed because of the internet. People seem to want to tear things
down more than they want to support anything. I always thought it’s
better to mean a lot to a small number of people, than mean little to
a large number of people. It takes a long time to prove yourself in
music because there’s so many people doing it and because its rife
with fads, but underrated or overrated don’t really mean anything,
especially when you look back on bands in retrospect. It should be
more about personal taste and choice than putting down an artist
someone else likes that you “don’t get.”
Describe your man-cave/filthy hovel.
It’s a mess. It works for me.
What's a dream date with Mark Sauner like?
Instant connection, effortless.
If you could be someone's pet, who would that person be?
I’m not into S and M, but I’d choose Nigella Lawson or Christina
Hendricks, get it?
Guilty pleasures?
None, I don’t feel guilty about any pleasure.
Tea or coffee?
Coffee

What's on the horizon for The Pink Noise?
I’m going to focus on being a better singer, lyricist and performer. I’m leaving the music to the rest of the band to create. I don’t smoke as much weed as before, so I don’t hear the drum beats, samples or melodies like I used to, or maybe I’ve played out all that I could/wanted. I hope to record with the new line-up on a higher fidelity than before, so we’re not simply known as a four track band. I’ve wanted to tour for a while now but don’t have the time or money to plan a tour at the moment.

All for my Tarantula Sisters Zine (for sale in my shop right now!), we got tipsy on wine at 10 a.m. and the boys got bundled up and we did a little shoot showcasing some of their vintage goodies that have for sale. Then we brought a giant bag full of plastic babies to the parc and had a picnic.

Hi guys! I've been working hard the last month on a new project - a zine! It is focused on music, fashion and art in Montreal. The first issue is just abot finished, I have some crazy running around to do in the next few days and maybe an all-nighter of folding and stapling, all for the zine launch on Friday night at Fattal. Hi! Thought it would be fun to make a series of little posts on some of the creative and wonderful people Ive been lucky enough to meet in the past few years since moving to Montreal.

First up is Maude! She basically rules, she is the punk knitting queen of Montreal (or the World, quite possibly). My brother has been watching her for years making custom knit pieces for fashion boys on Superfuture, she know sells some special items for Trusst Club and has a great blog that posts her inspirations and projects.

Plus guess what she collaborated on a few pieces in my new fall 2011 collection, cant wait til it goes online in the next 2 weeks, her pieces turned out awesome!
